FOUNDER, The Purse

If I weren't doing this I would be...

Honestly, I don't think there's anything I'd rather be doing than talking to women about money and writing about their experiences.

Three adjectives to best describe you:

According to my 7 year old, I'm kind, fascinating, and hard-working.

Leadership is...

Hard! Good leaders need good support systems. They need good mentors and people behind the scenes who champion their work. With that support, they can in turn offer support and champion the work of others.

What can we do to encourage and mobilize more women to step up to leadership?

It needs to be more than just tools and training. As I said in an earlier question, leadership is difficult, and good leaders need good support systems. This is especially true for mothers. It's easy to understand why women might not want to be leaders if they're worried that it will be impossible to juggle work with family life.

Your biggest loss:

I've had a lot of small disappointments over the years—missing out on jobs I wanted, navigating toxic workplaces, feeling overlooked or under appreciated at work, etc. Thankfully, I am healthy, and my family is healthy, and I think that's more important than any work disappointment, so I try to keep it all in perspective.

Your biggest win:

It's a work in progress, but giving up a full-time job to launch The Purse and seeing its growth over the past year has been an amazing experience. I feel so lucky to have this opportunity to build something on my own, and I'm proud of myself for taking such a big risk.

Words to live by:

“It’s hard to be a diamond in a rhinestone world.” Dolly Parton

Fantasy dinner date:

Nora Ephron. Heartburn is one of my all-time favorite books.

Favorite self-care ritual:

A long walk while listening to my "NYC Walking Mix."

I negotiate to...

Ensure a better life for me and my family.

Best negotiation tip:

I learned from Fran Hauser! Go in with kindness and an open mind. Negotiating often feels like a battle, but it doesn't have to be.
